If you’re not on my email list, (you can subscribe here) here is a taste of what a weekly newsletter to artists looks like:

Next year’s OSA class will be Intermediate/Advanced Painting- All Media on the First, Third and Fourth Thursdays of the month, 9:30-12:30. Begins 9/3/15. A great value at $25 each session

Thank you to Sandra Wood for hosting our class at her beautiful home! What a view-

Last week we continued talking about using value for paintings… focusing on mixing neutrals from compliments: yellow & violet, orange & blue, red & green.

Getting excited for my upcoming beach retreat, I focused on an abstracted scene of waves crashing on rocks. I used an off-center x shaped design. The first washes looked dark, but dried to a mid-tone. I actually had to re-state some of the darker shapes as they dried to get the value I wanted.

For your summer artists challenge, the idea is to do several large paintings, at least 22×30″. Working larger has many advantages:
~More area to cover with color/pattern/ etc.
~More Impact
~Easier to paint detail

Working in a larger format is more a mental hurdle than a physical one. You can if you think you can! Give it a try and I look forward to seeing your work in the fall.
