Salon Style Can Refer to Hanging Art, or Hanging Out with Artists
I love receiving newsletters from the web aggregator Houzz. I get ideas for everything from wall colors to hanging artwork. A recent newsletter had this wonderful tutorial on how to hang paintings and prints: from salon style, to clusters, to grids. Read all about it here:
One thing I’m noticing as a recent trend is the return of interior walls in white or off-white. I’m not sure I’m quite ready for that, I’m such a color-lover… but at least with colorful artwork, white walls don’t have to be boring.
The article about hanging artwork Salon style got me started thinking about hosting an Art Salon again.
It is something I’ve toyed with in the past, but put off. There has been a recent upswing in the concept of Salons, and I can see why. Evenings devoted to network television can rot the mind! I’ve probably put it off because I’m not sure how to gauge interest or organize such an event. But I love a good party, so I’m going to try to turn this idea into a reality.
Originally, art salons started as a way for writers to get feedback on their works in progress. I participate in a couple of art groups organized around the same principle. But my idea for this group would be based on any number of creative pursuits, not just visual arts. I’d like to cross-pollinate with other creatives… sculptors, writers, musicians, foodies, garden designers, wine-makers, etc.
I’d like to host something once every two months… At each event I’d like to have different creators talk briefly about their work, and introduce a question or subject for discussion. I’m pretty open to other ideas for such a group… and I’d love to get your feedback.

I’ve considered starting a Salon, too, Ruth, but it never got off the ground. Check out Molly Cliff Hilts page about the salons she and her husband have, as did her ancestors… http://www.mollycliffhilts.com. I’ve been to a couple and found them to be great fun. They had live music, catered food, paintings for sale, shared lots of ideas, and had a grand time. You have the home for it, for sure. Count me in.
Wow, Jo – Molly’s salons look very cool – professional, stimulating… I hope mine will compare even slightly! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
So have I Jo — and we possibly have the space in our industrial building here in NW.
I’m with Jo! I’ve often thought of holding a salon event (and may do so next year since my husband’s retiring at the end of this year and I know he’d love to co-host with me). But since you are first out of the gate, I would love to attend a salon at your place. You are going to have a lot of interested (and interesting) people sign up. I think creative people yearn for connection with other creatives–something that goes beyond critique groups. As usual, you are blazing a trail!
Thanks Liz! I don’t claim to be blazing a trail… I’m certainly not the first to think about this idea. But I really think collectors and other creatives would be interested in a peek ‘behind the scenes’ of the creative process. I hope more of my patrons will express an interest too!
I’d be interested. I don’t have time to fill out your form now….
Thanks Kate! I will get in touch later in the month 🙂
