Spring Showers
It snowed here again this morning & I have a bad cold. I know this weather will eventually bring the flowers though... Above is a demonstration piece from my watercolor class at Umpqua Valley Arts in November. It's hard to see in the small image, but there are...
Adventures with New Media
I showed a few of my recent efforts in oil to my critique group this week. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they felt this new media looked very similar to my work in other media. Since I'm just learning some of the properties of oil paints, this was a welcome...
Room for Painting – An Event of the Mind and Soul
I'm reading The Content of Watercolor by Edward Reep. Many of the illustrations are in black & white, but some wonderful ones are in color. I've been especially interested in his description of how his work evolved and changed with the influence of life events:...
New Work
I've been working in the studio, experimenting with all kinds of paintings: landscapes, figures, watercolors, acrylics, oils... This cold weather seems to have been influencing my color palette. I usually prefer warmer hues, but recently my new work has been drifting...
Blogs to watch 2012
I worked this weekend on this painting, which I had never really felt was complete. Now I think my original intention has been realized. It's amazing what adding more color will do. The original version is on the left....
Montana
This is the first in a series of images I'm working on. My son & I took a trip to Yellowstone National Park several years ago, just the two of us. He is a geology major, and it was wonderful to see his eyes light up when watching the geysers, but I enjoyed the...
Palouse
Available at Riversea Gallery Several years ago we took a trip on the Lower Salmon River with Orange Torpedo Trips. The drive through Eastern Washington included some of the most beautiful landscapes of rolling wheat fields. I have enjoyed painting them recently!
Sun Seekers
The sun is shining and I'm excited to be out in it this afternoon. I am planning a drawing expedition with a friend. My recent trip to Arizona re-enforced the importance of spending time with art friends and getting out into nature. I so enjoyed seeing this part of...
Spark Session Re-Cap
Six hard-working, enthusiastic painters converged here at my studio this weekend for our Mixed-Media Spark Session. We painted, experimented, snacked, ate and shared for three full days. Each participant took risks, stuck it out through the hard phases and came up...
Artist to Artist
Available at RiverSea Gallery It's been over a month since I posted, and I have been busy in the studio! Often times I like to let new work stew for a bit before I decide whether I like it or not. My perception sometimes changes and I like a new piece more... other...
Still Room in the March “Spark Session”
There is still room in my Mixed Media Spark Session March 1, 2 & 3, 2012! Check out what people are saying..... "I really appreciate you as a teacher as well as an artist. I’ve had lots of workshops with many different people – some of them quite famous. But you...
100 Artists 2012 – The Art of Communication
Re-entering the studio is never easy after a holiday. It always requires some time to get the flow back. This year, I decided to start back with acrylic, the most forgiving medium. I'm working on a series of pieces about the dark forest. I want it to feel like a...
All about my Palette
A fresh start for the new year should include some clean, fresh color in the palette, and that got me thinking... I don't think I've ever posted about my choice of colors or my actual palette before. I've migrated between several different watercolor palettes,...
Red Umbrella, Personal Gifts
This is a painting from my workshop at Umpqua Valley Arts last month. I've been absent from the studio most of this month, preparing for the holidays, enjoying the camaraderie of friends and fellow artists. Thank you for your interest in my work and support over the...
Jingling Goat Bells
An art and facebook friend Katherine Dunn posted an appeal from a friend of hers who needed to re-home two wethers before Thanksgiving. We finally got around to meeting and both decided that her boys Puck & Draco would make a good addition to my herd. She had moved to an apartment in Olympia and couldn’t keep them up there, so was traveling down here to care for them and depending on a friend to help out too. They arrived early this week and are integrating well, though they still like to push my smaller nubians around when it comes to feeding time. For the time being, they have their own stall and I’ve moved the sheep to the third stall which used to house the pullets.
Tis the Season
For some reason I thought the weather was going to be sunny again today, and I had planned to work in the garden. I have some bulbs that need to go in the ground... grape hyacinths and snowdrops. I want them to have plenty of time to soak up all this RAIN and build...
Randall David Tipton Workshop
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, full of sharing with friends and family. I know I did. One thing that I'm so grateful for is being able to pursue my passion for art. I'm looking forward to sharing that with like-minded individuals at Randall Tipton's...
Autumn Joys, Ten Reasons to be Thankful this Week
1. I'm home safe & sound from my week in Southern Oregon 2. We had a fabulous class at the Umpqua Valley Arts Center... making art and new friends 3. The last of the fall color is still lingering, despite the wind & rain 4. My...
Truly, Madly, Deeply
This watercolor flew home from Golden, Colorado this past weekend, fresh from the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia show, juried this year by Cheng Khee Chee. I was happy to see it traveled safely in its cushioned box 🙂 I had been agonizing over which image to enter...
Mini-Workshop with Randall Tipton offered
Yesterday I delivered work to the Riversea Gallery in Astoria. It was a great, uncrowded, day at the beach. I had the chance to pop in to White Bird Gallery in Cannon Beach on the way home to visit the paintings of one of my favorite Oregon artists, Randall Tipton....
