“Hide and Seek” started with a different title in my mind:
Run and Fall Down
One of our favorite outdoor games on the farm in early June was to run through the tall grass as far as we could go, then fall down into a magically created fort of green walls all around. This rendered us practically invisible to anyone from a distance. The field still appeared seamless, when in reality a child-sized area was matted down, providing a springy bed from which to look up at the sky, and walls to peer over in eager anticipation of being found.
I tried to paint this excitement, the feeling of purity and energy that the game still conjures in my mind. I have wonderful memories of watching my kids play the same game. Can you find some of the symbols I have included here?
I will soon be framing this piece for inclusion in the Sitka Invitational. I hope you can visit with it in person!

Beautiful, Ruth. And I love the story. It does seem carefree and fun.
I really like this one, Ruth. It looks like childhood fun — and what great memories you have to draw from for your paintings!
Thanks Katherine! Yes, I’m very lucky to have grown up on a farm 🙂
