Today was the first of many moving days for our family this fall. We collected a trailer load of furniture & home goods for my daughter’s first place in Corvallis. I’ve been busy this week re-furbishing an antique sewing machine cabinet for her to use as a desk. Many hours of sanding, priming and painting later, & she has a cute desk 🙂
My sister donated a love-seat to the cause which had originally lived with another sister. We went through the cupboards and removed all the ‘logo item’ glassware and mis-matched dishes. I rid mysself of a sofa table I’ve never liked, and our old leather sofa & love-seat. We have ordered new furniture for our family room. It should arrive any day! I’m looking forward to that 🙂
My daughter was in such a great mood. I know she is really looking forward to getting back to school and out on her own. I probably won’t mind having my studio back either! She still has one more load to take down… probably next weekend.
After they left I ran a few errands, then finally hit the studio and started a new painting! It has been too long, and I’m afraid this one may be destined for the recyle bin, but it is a start. Sometimes you have to go through the ugly ones to get warmed up. I will wait till I look at it fresh tomorrow and decide then whether to finish it or give it up and start a fresh one.
Tomorrow will be moving day #2 as daughter #2 heads back to Willamette. She has less stuff, as she is living in the dorms again this year. Fall always brings back memories of school shopping and heading back to classes. This year I’m looking forward to having a move for us as well. We are making slow but steady progress on the final details we need to take care of to close on our new home. I can hardly wait to get settled! But after moving just the small stuff we did today, I’m not looking forward to packing up everything!
I remember our first move as a married couple… my friend came to help and I hadn’t even collected boxes yet!
Do you have a favorite moving or back-to-school memory?
Ruth,
I know what you mean about getting back in the studio. It’s awkward at first for me. My goal is to be back to painting after an upcoming Labor Day trip to Vancouver to take care of two grandbabies.
Good Luck with your packing!
I remember when my boys— one by one went off to kindergarten– and I went out to lunch to celebrate.
But I know sending them off to college is bittersweet– because you are sad to see them go but thankful for the peace and quiet 🙂
My most memorable moving day was the day I moved from Missoula, Montana to Salt Lake City, Utah to start my first real job as a geologist fresh out of grad school. Loaded the plants and the cat in the eco-car Chevy Spectrum (it had no AC) and made the drive. Stopped at a rest area in Idaho to strech our legs. I put Flower the cat on a long leash and let her wander around. She wandered into a lava tube and wouldn’t come out! Finally, after 25 minutes in the tube, I started to tug on the leash, gently at first but more firmly as the minutes ticked by. I didn’t realize that if I pulled hard enough, the break-away safety collar I had on her would, you guessed it, break away! Oh no! I thought I would lose her forever. Eventually, after much pleading and then firm commanding, she came out on her own. She was never allowed to get out of the car on trips after that. As if moving to a new city to start your first job were not adventure enough!
