This painting was inspired by an earlier series of watercolors that I did. I wanted to revisit the subject in oil. Each time I work on a painting in a series I make new discoveries. I like the ability to layer and blend more easily in oil. It really allows for more sensitive color harmonies. I’m experimenting in how polished to make the oil paintings, and finding I prefer the energy of a painting that has been done in one or two sessions. This one took three or four. Let me know what you think!
I love her and the bird on her shoulder, so Portlandia. If you are painting in Oil, are you working on a piece longer? I just remember how long you worked on the one in Mark’s class (2004.)You could take weeks to do an oil!….
Thanks Carrie,
I’m not really working on these much longer than on a watercolor. This particular painting I did a bit more detail than I would have on a watercolor… I love how the underneath layers stay put when you glaze.
Beautiful – I love the softness you have created. (I know there is probably a more artistic way to express what I just said, but the words escape me!)
Thanks Kathleen!
The subtlety of the color blending works so well with your subject matter. I like what you are doing!
Thanks Linda! Missed you at critique yesterday…
